Question by Mr. Blackfist: When certain establishments charge fees after entry without signs saying so, is that legal in Thailand?
I saw on youtube where a guy said he walked into a bar in Bangkok where they told him to just sit down and have a drink and thats it, he got his drink and two Australian girls sat down with him, and then the owner charged him an adidtoinal $ 150 U.N. fee (or something like that) and they told him if he does not pay the fee he goes to jail so he went on and paid it.

I am not a lawyer but i am not stupid either but in the U.S. if a sign is not posted outside the bar or somewhere the owner(s) of the establishment nor the police can legally make you pay the $ 150 fee.

But by Thai law could that guy have been thrown in jail if he did not pay the $ 150 U.N. fee or did he get ripped off?

Yeah, it happens also in London where you enter a bar said to have some explicit shows and they charge entrance fee. Only after you got in, they said the show’s not here, then taking you somewhere else where you pay another entrance fee. Then, they say it’s somewhere else and another entrance fee. It could go on and on until you lost all your money or the sun comes up.
Not sure what you can do about it. It’s not worth going to court for 150, risking also street fights.

It’s ok…. Who Killed Elias? Wasn’t taken any offense by your answer or anyone. Scams happen everywhere.
    BTW who is Elias?

I’m Thai. I’m sorry for him to experience such incident. This kind of scam is illegal but hardly get punished. This is how it works.

    1. A tourist, Thai or foreigner, lured in and sit. Just sit, and he is charged for the seat fee. Then he drinks. Even it is a glass of water, he get charged for water. The charge is 20000% – 40000% more than he could buy it from a local store. There was a Thai guys get this scam. They drank 2 glasses of beer with 2 girls. They were charged 15,000 baht for half an hour. That’s 438$ at exchange rate 35B/$ . The store said the price of the goods showed on the menu. The menu is never be shown to the customer.

This is this kind of scam gets on TV and stir things up a bit. Then, police investigate and things go quiet until now. I bet with your toe-nail that a police or a politician own that bar.

If anyone get invited into a pub, ask for menu first. Never sit, never drink, never sing with the girls before you see a written price list.

In short, this scam is illegal. But, welcome to Thailand. There are 3 things that rule the country. Gun, money and mass. See what? Not a word of law.

It happens. Tourists often fall for it. But you don’t have to. Smile, and walk out. If they persist, let them file a complaint with the police. The tourist police will not allow it, and probably close the bar themselves.. As simple as that.

Of course it isn’t that simple. They will not approach the Tourist police, but want to go to the local police station, where they have an officer in the scam. They will use a lot of intimidation to get you cough up the money. But if you persist, they cannot do anything. It will spoil your evening, though.

Make sure you got the number of the Tourist police handy, just in case. That can save you a lot of trouble.
