It is easy to get a tour guide in Chiang Mai (same for Bangkok and Phuket) by finding the nearest travel agency and tell them you want to see their list of tours. Travel agencies in Thailand are all over the place, just find the one closest to your hotel and sign up. You can check out more than one place and go with the one you are most comfortable with. Most of the prices are about the same price. If your travel agency is close to expensive hotels they may charge a little more than travel agencies closer to budget hotels – but it could be the same tour company picking you up.

Travel agencies act as brokers for tour companies. The tour company will pick you up at your hotel and return you there at the end of the trip. Probably millions and millions of tourists have taken tours this way.

Most of the tours you are part of a small group of tourists on a 9 or 10 passenger van with a driver and tour guide. Most of the tours are pretty standard and most of the tour companies go to the same areas. You can sign up for a personal tour, your own van or car if you want, that is the most expensive way to go.

Some of the places they routinely go to are to the local hill tribe villages, the Long Neck Women villages, Golden Triangle and elephant parks, etc.

So it is up to you, get a shared van tour or go with a private tour. Usually tours you get after you get to Thailand are cheaper than those you purchase when you are in another country. Some hotels also have tour desks.

Good luck.

I’m the best there is, but really it all depends on what you want ot do and where you want to go. It certainly isn’t a good idea to book anything till you’ve seen the tour agency home base and spoken to them.
Advance booking in Chiang Mai is anything between ten minutes and a couple of hours, depending on whether the guide happens to be eating a meal or not, anything longer and the people you’re dealing with will either have forgotten who you are, or taken up a better offer, or converted to a massage shop.

Get in touch if you need more advice.

we went on a 3 day trekk with this guy and it was the best.. He can do the driving, knows the trails, the animals and plants. He is a good cook and makes it just an amazing experience. My Thai wife said he is a good reputable man and the price was very reasonable.
I will send you his facebook page, you can see the tours for yourself. Or just ask me by email.
