Q&A: Will I get into University?? Please help!?
Question by Jackie: Will I get into University?? Please help!?
OKAY I know this is CRAZY long. Sorry about that! But please it would mean a lot to me if you would read through this, and provide a detailed answer! Thank you so much
So I’m from western Canada. I am graduating this year in June (Home-schooled) But I am taking a gap year. I will be applying to Uni this December. Just so you know my online school is fully credited and I know for sure that aspect will not hinder my acceptance! Just for those who are ignorant to home-schooling
So here are my Grade 12 courses and grades:
English- 92%
History- 94%
Law- 95%
Grad Transitions (Required) – 100%
Work exp A and B (Not really a course, I just log hours of my work, and volunteering for credit)
Foods- 100% (Just did it for fun!)
PE- 100% (Again, I work out alot so I figured why not right?)
Comparative Civilizations- 98%
Unfortunately these are my only courses I took for senior year
I worked full time and had family commitments in the first half. I am however doing more courses over the summer and part of fall. It doesn’t count as an adult course, it just goes on my transcript. However I am not sure if the Uni’s will see when it was completed.. Will that matter at all?? These are the courses I am taking:
Biology- Hope to get around 90% (Science isn’t my strong suit)
English Literature- Hoping 95% or more
Writing- Hoping again 95% or more
Possibly maths.. I am not very good in this area but might take because I wanted to possibly take economic type courses.. I would use a tutor is so!
I will also be taking french courses, since I am going to France for 6 months, au pairing and taking french over there
I don’t speak very good French right now, didn’t take it in high school. I really have a passion to learn it though! And these courses are in the community, not high school.
Okay so now extracurricular. I honestly don’t have a whole lot going for me. Please keep in mind if you are from the states, grades are the focus here in Canada, for most schools (excluding places like Queens) So I am not TOO worried but still..
Worked a part time/full time job for the past 2 years
Volunteer in childcare at a local pool/gym past year now. It’s focus is their “strong kids” campaign. I have helped them with their fundraisers
Salvation army during the christmas past 2 yrs, I plan on doing some more when spots open in May
Duke of Edinburgh Bronze
I have won a couple community photography contests
I am entering and hoping to place in a writing contest this fall!!
This summer I am going over to volunteer in either China or Thailand for 4 weeks. ![]()
I am going to try job shadowing/interning at the newspaper, volunteer companies, etc
I was never a sports person, I did dance back when I was 15 quite intensively, but quit so I could work a part time job and keep up with school. As you can tell I am definitely a more arts focused person, like humanities. I am applying to Humanities: international affairs, business, economics, political science, and french are some of my ideas. I want to someday work for international businesses, my dream is working for a group like the United Nations, working for the gov. in foreign affairs, anything in that aspect really. I have a huge passion for these things, but I don’t know how to show this to Universities
I know this is probably really long, but PLEASE help!!
Wow! Can’t believe I didn’t mention this! I am applying to University of British Columbia, Victoria, Van Island Uni, Calgary, a couple colleges as back ups as well. My dream however is either Dalhousie or Toronto. I know.. long shot. But since I am not going into a competitive field like commerce does this help? I also really like Queens and Ottawa, I’m fairly indecisive haha. So do I stand a chance at any of these schools? Mainly the eastern choices? And can you offer me any advice to perk up my application? I didn’t realize what I wanted in life until this last year.. Thankyou in advance!!
