Wild elephant and baby crossing the road

These two elephants came out onto the road first, and then retreated into the jungle as we approached. Our guide dismissed our disappointment, drove a little away, turned around and instructed us to watch. These two were the first of 12 elephants!

Once the whole family was closer, these two came back out of the jungle because there were more adults to safeguard the baby.

The elephants travel at dusk because it’s cooler and often come out onto the road because it’s easier to travel for them than in the jungle.

We watched from the back of the pickup truck, moving slowly away from them as they walked towards us. They were only 30 feet away!

As it was dusk, getting dark tropically quickly, and I didn’t want to use flash, I mostly took video which gave a better picture in the low light.
