I researched this carefully before an ‘around the world’ trip a year ago. Do a websearch on “ekit” and you will find a pre-paid calling card that is very cost effective for calling back to the states from many countries. You can also get pre-paid cards when you are there, but I believe they will cost much more.

Hello! Yes it is very expensive to call from another country. I bought a calling card one time that had 5,000 minutes on it and I was excited about talking to my bf in europe and when I got on the phone with him it only gave me 8 minutes to talk to him and I paid $ 30 for the phone card! I was pissed. And if he is trying to make it work that far away you should try too, and if its meant to be things will work out! Good luck! However things happen I hope your happy in the end!
if he makes a call to you via his Thai mobile phone (easy to get sim card and cheap, 2-3 usd) it would cost him 5 bht/min (dial 009+country code-area code + number). It would be cheaper if you call him at his Thai mobile phone from your home (use your home phone card).
I used to buy phone card in us and called back to Thailand, it’s cheaper as it went through internet line. My friend in canada also calls me using phone card (quality is reasonable and ok but not as good as when I call her)
He also can buy phone card in Thailand and use the public phone to call you back, the rate should be the same 5 bht/min. (36 bht / usd).
