Question by : Is it possible to travel between Thailand and Indonesia by Ferry?
I’m going travelling in March and was hoping there would be a direct Ferry between Thailand (or one of it’s islands) and Indonesia, without having to go through Malaysia. I’ve looked online, and no such option seems available, does anyone know any different?

If this isn’t possible, I was wondering if anyone has had experience of this journey, going through Malaysia, and if this is an easy, no hassle option. We’re trying to fly as little as possible.

Many Thanks

If you have the ferry, then you can go wherever you want – but I do not ever remember hearing of one that goes that way – I don’t know of anyone being hassled unless they were carrying drugs – but hassled can mean different things. I got hassled in my hotel in Singapore because I dozed off in a comfortable chair in the lobby. They didn’t cane me or anything – they just told me not to fall asleep – I asked if it was ok just to close my eyes – they had a guard watch me.

There is no ferry connecting Thailand to Indonesia. If you travel by land then you would end up in the island of Borneo/Kalimantan, depending on your destination in Indonesia, you will probably have to fly to leave the island since Indonesia is a vast country.

Yes, it’s possible, but you have to transfer twice in Malaysia. First, take a ferry from Satun, Thailand to Langkawi, Malaysia. Then, take another ferry from Langkawi to Penang, Malaysia. Then, take a ferry from Penang to Medan, Indonesia.
