As the crow flies Bangkok to Phuket around 430 miles and Bangkok to Chiang Mai around 362 miles.

By bus and or train it is a long ride. You can take an overnight sleeper train up to Chiang Mai and save paying for another night in a hotel in Bangkok. Book the overnight sleeper train in advance to guarantee a berth.

Flight time depends on aircraft – figure on 1.5 hours plus time getting to and waiting at the terminal. Two airports in Bangkok. Don’t schedule a flight to either place immediately after arriving in Bangkok without knowing where your connecting flight leaves from and have sufficient time for making connections.

Both airports are not close together, some local within Thailand flights leave from Don Muang on the other side of the city. Best to plan on a few days in Bangkok first and then fly, bus or train out to somewhere else.

You can check with Thai Air and see what they charge for a flight. If you go with a discount airline be aware of the weight allowances. In Bangkok you can usually purchase a plane ticket to either place with a couple days notice from a travel agency. Around Christmas or New Years add a day or two.

(Travel agencies in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket are also the place to visit to see about tours.)

Good luck.
